Hi, my brother is looking to spend about £35 ($50) on an AMD Phenom X4 that is (hopefully) at least 3ghz. His motherboard is an MSI MS-7309.

Is that a price he could get one of those? Doesn't have to be black edition, not even new. He just needs an upgrade badly but has very limited cash supply.

Any ideas?

The best CPU your motherboard will support is the Anthlon x2 5200+. It's not much of an upgrade from what you have, so it probably wouldn't be worth buying. Here's a link to processor support for your motherboard.

As cheap as possible what motherboard would you suggest that would support a Phenom II X4?

For about $46 you can get this motherboard. It's a good brand, it will support any phenom II or Anthlon II CPU, and it will also support all of the lastest bulldozer CPU's and maybe even some of the Piledrivers with a BIOS update.

I'm no expert on CPU coolers but I'm pretty sure that you can't get a cooler better than the stock cooler for $10. You would probably have to spend somewhere between $20 and $30.
