Hello,
I have been reading the TH forum for quite some time and now also decided to register.
Off the bat i would like to congratulate the people who decided to implement the tagging feature which helps a lot in getting answers to problems which are cross-category. Hopefully other forums will do the same. There are a few things however which, from a newcomer's perspective, i find confusing.
1. What is the difference between a discussion and a question?..pretty much any question is a discussion. And any discussion can be written as a question. Does the user choose wheter the thread is a question or do the moderator decide?
2. What does ask the community checkbox do? If i don't check it doesn't my thread get posted to the forum?..to me community=forum. If it's not like that, what are the differneces?

Thanks in advance for your answers

Ok so i think i got it .. questions can be solved and have an accepted answer. a discussion can not right?..
So the ask the community makes the thread a question. Otherwise the topic is just a discussion ( your average thread). right?

Absolutely spot on :)

Well in that case i think the label next to the checkbox should be something like : Make this thread a question ( gives the possibility to mark a post as an accepted solution) . With the text in the parantheses being a tooltip

Hey there, thegeo! Welcome to Tom's Hardware! Glad to have you with us. :)

You certainly answered your own question there.. The difference between a Question and a Discussion is that checkbox you mentioned, and in fact, we've been discussing how to make this fact more apparent for new (and old!) users. You'll see this change in the very near future. Additionally, new thread options posted in different areas will default to automatically being a Question type, or Discussion type, depending on where they are being posted.

Edit: While I was posting this, I realize we already released a patch update to change the text this morning. It should say "Request solutions to this Question (not a discussion)" now.

definitely sounds more clear than before. BTW can a question be converted to a discussion? If it's possible, how can it be done?

Yes, it can indeed! Though I think right now there is an issue with this in the platform.
