Whether you decide to overclock or not, you're going to get more performance out of the 7870 than you will the 7850.

Will it be a substantial amount? Egh, not really, unless you decide to overclock ... then you might see a decent return.

If you plan to OC your GPU, get a 7850, they have way more overclocking head room than the 7870 and will match it. If you want to stay at stock clocks, go ahead and spend the extra money on the 7870, it's not a whole lot better, but it doesn't cost a whole lot more either.
