Hey, I am trying to mess around with some old EOL parts. This is a project for fun, but I was already planning on building some sort of NAS. That will be the primary function.

I have two Xeon X5470, a Quadro 295, and an assortment of HDDs.
I have 4GB DDR2 from a Core2Duo setup, but I assume thats no good, not ECC.

I was considering mobo ($100):

Looking for any and all suggestions with where to go with this, starting with Case RAM and Motherboard. I am used to building computers but never used workstation parts. I have no idea if I can order a large tower to place the build inside just like I would a gaming rig.

You don't need ECC for a home NAS. You need ECC for mission critical servers.

Let me show you something - This is not to dissuade you, I'm just making the point about hardware requirements for an NAS.

Here is one of the best pre-made NAS boxes:

The DS1812+ ships with a dual-core 2.13 GHz processor, 1GB DDR3 RAM (it supports up to 3GB)

Any desktop/server CPU is pretty much overkill for a simple NAS, so just get yourself a board that will support your DDR2, if possible.

I understand that this is complete overkill. I like to mess around with stuff just for the fun of it. However I have no idea how to get this system up and running. If i were to abandon the idea it would be because the parts needed are just way more $$ than expected.
