long story short?

i would recommend...

either an i5 or i7 processor
8gb name brand ram. prefer mushkin, corsair
name brand motherboard with sata6, usb3, onboard sound preferably an enthusiast board.
120-256gb boot drive (or 512 main drive no sub drive if you prefer) prefer samsung or intel.
500gb-1tb storage drive (see above) prefer wd caviar black, samsung spinpoint f3, seagate barracuda
nvidia gtx470/gtx480 or amd equivalent. prefer evga
name brand psu for the wattage range (650-850) prefer pcp&c or corsair.
any decent case with good airflow. haf, antec 900, etcetera.

if you want to game at high fps on brand new games such as metro you may have to sli or crossfire.
