can't read all the files on my external hd

I recently a laptop from a friend and restored it to factory and it works fine
but when I plug my external hard drive in I can only see a few of the movie files in the folder where there is about 50 movies but when I plug the hard drive back up to my desktop all the movie files are there. Any thoughts? Thanks

The hard drive may be failing.... get the files you want OFF NOW...into your desktop, while you think about it...
