Why Raspberry Pi?

Is there anything useful to be done with the Raspberry Pi, other than building clusters with Lego? Okay, so I'm a cynic. Have there been any killer applications, or kids working with them who would not have worked with a "regular" PC? I'd like to hear good news.

In the UK, radio stations have reported an increased interest among younger folks to learn programming based on the lessons given with the Raspberry Pi. Cash-strapped schools were able to buy them whereas more expensive systems were beyond reach in the slump.

Only time will tell whether the benefits will last but if nothing else comes from this, the Microsoft stranglehold on young minds might be broken and Sourceforge libraries should fill up a bit more.

I always hoped the Pi would be a "clean slate" system to teach programming to kids the traditional structured problem solving, top-down design, modular implementation skills that you used to get in the pre-Windows days, back when every school had an Apple IIe and you could turn it on and start messing around in Basic. In other words, like a unix telnet session that we used to used in college programming 101, writing code in vi.

Unfortunately I don't know that is "sexy" enough to move units to schools that want to dazzle parents, so I see it taking on a "look what those kids can build" bent, which is why I'm not pressing my kid's school to get any.
