I just recently filled up my 2tb hard drive and need to expand. I recently discovered the SSHD options and thought about building my own version.

I like the idea of having an adaptive cache as it suits the way I use my pc.

I use pretty much the same programs every day. Chrome, Photoshop, Email, VLC Player, WinRAR, Encoding Videos with ffmpeg.

I also have about 5-10 games I rotate between and play most days. I leave games on my hdd for a long time as it takes me forever to complete them as I move from one to the other when I get bored.

So this is where just having a SSD drive for my game installs would not be sufficient, because most games I have on my hdd are 10gb+ and could not fit all the games on an ssd within my price range and would have to move them off the ssd when I want to install a new game. (I'm looking for 80-120gb)

Having an SSD as a cache seems to suit me as it would store the games I'm playing currently so they can be accessed quicker and when I install a new game that would appear in the cache.

So I have a few questions –

How much cache would be sufficient?

Are particular SSD drives better for use as a cache than other, any specific features of an SSD I should be looking for?

The SSD as a cache would mean that doing things such as encoding would still be processed with the HDD and therefore not increase in speed right?

How easy is it to set this up yourself is there any specific hardware I need apart from a HDD and SSD to do this?

First of all when you are going to a SSD you will want to be running your OS on it as well.

As for what you should have you really haven't specfied a price range. if you are just looking to run your OS on it you can get away with a 60GB Drive which would run you about $50.00 CDN plus tax for a refererbished SSD

It would really Help to know your budget. where you are located and a prefered website or company you want to buy from

If you are looking for more storage you are going to pay a premium. But you can most likely swing a 256gb SSD for 200 dollars. Not the newest modle but still good.

isn't using a caching SSD specifically for intel? And then doesn't intel restrict you to 64gb anymore?

ok i guess ill reinstall my OS on it.

price range $100 max if im just going to be sticking to 60-100gb ssd

ill probably get a big ssd for storage when the price comes down, right now just looking for caching increase and obviously OS increase
