Hi Everyone,

I have a 3ware 9650SE-8LPML RAID Card that I want to use to create a RAID10 array for some VM's on my ESXi whitebox server. The array will host around 4/5 servers.

I have 20 x HP 146GB 10K SAS drives which I would like to use, but I also have 4 x 7200 SATAII 160GB drives I could use so I need to decide which one of the below I should go for.

http://www.icydock.com/goods.php?id=142 SATA ONLY

http://www.icydock.com/goods.php?id=114 SATA & SAS

I will eventually have 2 of one of the above.

Would you recommend using SAS or SATA? Maybe it is worth going for the SATA & SAS due to the fact I have many spare SAS drives and they are faster?

Any advice is much appreciated.

I look forward to hearing your responses.

Thanks.

I would use the sas drives, they'll do better in that enclosure being they're enterprise class rather than consumer.

Thanks for your reply.

Yes I thought this also. However I may be restricted to SATA drives as I sent LSI a message questioning whether the 9650SE supports SAS drives and the answer was no.

Shame.

I've gone for the SAS/SATA Type enclosure. I've got an HP P400 RAID Card and I'm going to try running VM's from 4 10K SAS Drives through that instead. I'll save the 9650SE for a Data Storage RAID.
