This will be my first computer build ever. I am building this mostly because I want a better experience when playing games than what I am getting now on my laptop. Please let me know your comments, concerns, advice, ideas etc... but most importantly how will this build work and will it work at all? Here are the items I have compiled off of newegg.com:

1. add a cpu cooler, coolermaster 212plus/evo or noctua d14.
2. you dont need a dedicated sound card unless you really want to.
3. i would get a 23"+ monitor at 1920x1080.
4. I would get a 670 instead of 660ti
5. you don't need 16gb for gaming, 8gb is more than enough

Looks good, as drunkducki pointed out, you really don't need a sound card.
Onboard audio works great for most things... and it usually just takes up space (aka reduces airflow, or ability to add a second graphics card later).

the 660ti is a good card, but according to this: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-5.html the Radeon HD 7950 Boost Edition is the best card at that price range. The GTX 670 is a great card, but $60 more.

If your serious about gaming (and keeping noise down), I recommend getting an aftermarket cooler too. The closed loop water coolers are very efficient and quiet, and much easier than they used to be to install. They are however, a little more expensive
I currently like the CORSAIR Hydro Series H80i Water Cooler. Currently at $94.99 on NewEgg, it is def. not cheap, but it works great

I agree with everyone so far - drop the sound card. You don't need it. You could also drop the 16GB RAM to 8GB and then upgrade your GPU to a base 7970 or a GTX 670. You could also use that money to upgrade your monitor to a 23.6" Asus or a 24" Viewsonic. That would be a better purchase than a 1600 x 900 monitor.

Although I will heavily disagree with the mention of the closed liquid loop. They're very difficult to maintain and they don't produce any faster overclocking results than a D14 would (see this: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/h100i-elc240-seidon-240m-lq320,3380.html, http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/water2.0-extreme-kraken-x40-hydro-h90-elc120,3434.html ).

How is a closed loop system hard to maintain. You install and forget. The only maintenance, is cleaning dust... which you have to do with air cooling anyway.
I know its not for everyone. But if your looking for a very cool system without a huge loud fan, than it can be a very good option.
They are way easier to install than the old open look systems where you had to worry about leaking joints and a reservoir to fill. These have none of those issues
