Helping friend find gaming laptop (~$1000)

For his birthday my best friend is going to ask for a gaming laptop from his (wealthy) grandparents. He wants the base Alienware M14x for 1000 dollars, but I'm going to try explain to him that it has inferior components at the price. Anyway, I've been looking around for a good laptop for him instead, and I've been thinking of the Lenovo Ideapad y580. The configuration I found has an i7 3630qm, NVidia gtx 660m, 8 gb ram, and is 1080p for 1000 dollars, which seems pretty great, especially in comparison. Anyway, I'm wondering if this is a good laptop for the price and/or if there are better laptops for gaming in the same price range. Help will be appreciated because I have pretty much no experience with computers.
