Need to read an Old Maxtor Drive

!!!NEED REAL HELP!!

Sister died of cancer. She had a computer running XP.

I pulled the hard drive, since her system had crashed. No Repair disks, etc couldb be found.

Brought it home and am trying to read it.

It has only one place to hook up a master hard drive.
Found an old Master/Slave ribbon
and hooked up my sisters drive as slave:

I can't get the MAXTOR 18002MAXTOR 1303-678-2045
to show up on the computer so I can read the contents and make a copy for her daughter.

40-wire or 80-wire IDE cable?

If 40-wire, make sure that you jumper the existing drive as Master, not Single. Then jumper the Maxtor as Slave.

If 80-wire, jumper both drives for Cable Select (CS). The drive on the end of the cable automatically becomes the Master, and the drive in the middle, the Slave.

It's chained properly, Both spin up and sound good, no reading on disk management or device manager.

Not sure if this will help but you could try putting it in an external drive enclosure which would connect via the the USB port. This would also allow you to test the drive on another computer.
