Working a side job

So, I'm going to start working as a side job as a computer technician / programmer and was wondering what I should charge the customer (hourly?)

It will be local so I doubt I'll get much request for programming. It will be primarily computer related issues with residential customers. I hope to get a few businesses as a regular also.

I would think an on site rate versus a remote assistance rate would be ideal?

I want to be fairly priced so I get recommended.

Also, I live in Alabama so I doubt the rate for my area would be the same for the rest of the world... :pt1cable:

Any suggestions?

The problem with that is if the customer asks how much I charge or what the cost will be, they will want an estimate.

I've worked for the same company for 15 years, I haven't freelanced before so this is new to me :)

Ask yourself what you would like to pay [ not free ]. I would pay like 20$ for someone to come in and uninstall a program or do whatever. If the problem is too complex you can ask them to pay you a little more.
