My Friend currently has a Gigabyte z68xp-ud4 he bought it and is going to get a 3770k but he is going to buy a Celeron for the moment (don't ask why).

His question is that on the compatability list for the motherboard it does not list a g550 which he is getting but it lists the g540- would this not matter as the 550 just has a higher clock speed. Also if this is the case would a g1610 work as it is the same price as the g550? thanks

(Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask)

They are identical processors except for a slight increase in GHZ, so there is no reason the G550 wouldn't work fine. It probably wasn't out at the time the CPU list was made and it hasn't been updated because the board is a generation old now.

The G1610 is an Ivy Bridge (as opposed to the G5xx Sandy Bridge) and may require a BIOS update to be recognized. Likewise, the 3770K may require a BIOS update to work on that board. (Probably why he wants to have an inexpensive SB processor around in case)
