Motherboard:
AsRock Z77 Extreme4 Motherboard (Socket 1155, Intel Z77, Up to 32GB DDR3, ATX, 2 x SATA3 6.0 Gb/s, Supports NVIDIA SLI and AMD CrossFireX, Premium Gold Caps)

CPU:
Intel 3rd Generation Core i5-3570K CPU (4 x 3.40GHz, Ivy Bridge, Socket 1155, 6Mb L3 Cache, Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0)

RAM:
Corsair 16 GB Vengeance 240-pin DIMM DDR3-RAM 1600 MHz PC Memory

and, because my motherboard has 4 memory slots, is it better to get 4 x 4gb memory cards or can i do 2 x 8gb and leave the other 2 unusead? would it make a difference if memory slots are not used?

btw i'm new to this, so simplify stuff so i would understand :)  i've researched quite a bit so i kind of know my stuff

PS: I have about £700 to spend

Looks good. You should be able to overclock pretty well, but you will probably need an aftermarket cooler once you start trying for higher clocks.

And when you install the RAM, make sure the two sticks have one slot separating each other so they run in dual channel mode.

I would suggest getting an aftermarket cpu cooler before any overclocking for good measure. The Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO is a cheap and effective cooler, and there are many options out there. I wouldn't suggest attempting any overclocking with a stock cpu cooler :)  Goodluck with the build though, all else looks good

Mainstream boards use a dual channel memory config, so you get the best performance using dual sticks. That being said, its not that big of a deal if you get a 4x4GB kit.

Agree with the others, if you want to overclock you need aftermarket cooling. The aforementioned 212 EVO is a great place to start.
