Bottleneck or not?

Hi, Here is my rig:

CPU: AMD Phenmon 2 X4 965 @3.4 (SC)
RAM: DDR2 8GB (not sure what company)
MB: ASUS M4N82 Deluxe
PSU: 850W ANTEC CP
GPU: GTX 570 Sonic Platinum X2 (SLI)

I have recently bought another GTX 570 Sonic Platinum so I can use SLI (got it cheap from Ebay) and I am playing Crysis 3 on Very High with everything to full even 8x AA.

Small areas with not alot of action I get around 50-60FPS (great stuff!) but in the first mission where you are running through vegetation it is around 15-25FPS (WTF). I know its a new game and not fully supported by SLI yet but surely I should be getting at least say 35-40.

So I was just wondering if my CPU is bottlenecking the perfomance since ive read Crysis 3 uses alot of the CPU Power. Sorry that its long winded, Also would anything else be bottlenecking it if its not the CPU?

Many thanks, Jamie

Also in some games since this SLI setup I have been getting FPS drops from like 80fps, turn around an it goes to like 40 then 60 then 40 then 80 so on. Any reason for this?

Do you have vsync? Lock your frame rate at say...60-70FPS, should help immensely. SLI/CF setups are notorious for having up and down framerates if you don't use vsync.

Ohh I see, so put Vsync on? Would you also say my CPU is bottlenecking my rig because I should be getting more than 20FPS in a game with SLI

You should be, and your Phenom II X4 should drive those just fine...it's enough horsepower. If you were trying to CF 2 HD 7870XTs, I would say you have a bottleneck...but with your setup you should be fine...try vsync and see if that fixes the problem. Set it to something between 50-70 FPS and see where it smooths out and play away :)

Good luck!

Still the same with Vsync on. Even lowered the AA to FXAA (lowest option) also have tried to disable it and still get around 25 to 30 in the big areas. Mmm confusing :(

Try using perfmonitor to see what your usage % is while running the game. If your CPU usage is 100% and your GPU usage is less than 95-96% then your CPU is a bottleneck, if your GPU usage is close to 100% and your CPU usage is low, it's your GPU's...if something else is running 100% and your GPU/CPU are not...then that is the bottleneck.
