P.S. I am looking to play games such as battlefield 3, bioshock infinite, skyrim, borderlands, minecraft... on the highest settings while having high fps with the lowest being at 60fps.

Drop the CPU cooler and thermal paste. You will not be overclocking that locked CPU.

Get an h77 motherboard for this same reason.

Get a 500w+ PSU.

So should I get the i5-3570k to overclock it even if I don't do it right away and get a larger psu?

If you want to overclock then go for it. You need a bigger PSU regardless. 400w isn't enough for a 7950.

ok i updated it with 550 watts and the i5-3570k. Do i still need to drop the fan, paste, and switch the motherboard or keep those? Also, should i go with the 7950 or go with a gtx 660 or gtx 660ti?

Keep the 7950 for sure. Get a Coolermaster hyper 212 EVO for the CPU fan. Its a great cooler for the cost. You will not need paste because it comes with the cooler.
