no boot execute in registry

Hello! I just started getting chkdsk on startup of my XP system for my external HD. I Went to edit the registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager

I went to change the BootExecute entry from:
autocheck autochk * /r\DosDevice\E:
To: autocheck autochk*

but it has not been altered. Could it be that my external drive is actually failing?

For using OS from external HDD, you don't need to edit registry. Just select the external HDD as your primary boot priority in BIOS.
