HD7770 vs GTX650 for LINUX gaming

Hi, I can't afford Windows 7 so I will either use Zorin OS, Ubuntu, or OpenSUSE. However I'm not sure which one I should use. Obviously in Windows, the HD7770 kicks the GTX650's butt, but is it any different on Linux? I will be running games on WineHQ, like Far Cry 3, Skyrim, Battlefield 3, CS: GO etc.. (also future games)

Thanks

GeForce cards have MUCH better drivers under linux/unix. They also have better OpenGL performance or at least use to. I recommend linux Mint, it's based off of Ubuntu but it's much more stable (uses a more stable Debian branch) and has packages with fxce, KDE, MATE, and cinnamon.

I would, but I'm on a $100-$105 budget. Maybe if I got an FX-6100 instead of a 6300, then I could go to a 650ti, but I haven't checked the prices

EDIT: ok, so I can get an FX-6100 instead and get an EVGA 650ti that 3 reviews say works wonderful on Linux

Yes, for a while I was thinking that, but I want to live stream, and 4 cores doesn't seem like enough :/

Live stream and game on linux? That's new. Your going to probably be better with an i5 or if you want AMD still go at LEAST with the 6300, the 6100 uses the rubbish bulldozer architecture.

xD love your reaction! [strike]But the thing is, I can't afford both the 6300 and the 650ti, unless I somehow make myself a case, mooch a Hard Drive from someone, or buy a PSU off a hobo for $10 :/[/strike] oops, didn't read that thorough enough :p And I found another 650ti from Gigabyte that is $10 cheaper, so now I just have to find a PSU around 500w under $30

I would just grab the Phenom II X4 965 for now and upgrade to a FX-8320 later or steamroller. Upgrading to a FX-6300 from a Phenom II X4 965 is just a side grade that's why I say 8320.

Ok, the Phenom it is! (I also found this which is cheaper than the other one)

Also what would be a good CPU cooler for overclocking (though I bet you are going to immediately say Cooler Master Hyper 212 plus :p)

More like "How the do I get this to WORK!!!!!" Right now gaming is best done on Windows (unfortunately). But that might change in the future. It's just some stuff works well in wine and some don't (READ: ALLOT DON'T).

That's why I looked at you funny when you said you wanted to stream and game on linux...

Haha, well I know Far Cry 3 and Skyrim can run on Wine, and CS: GO will be out on Linux soon, so I won't need Wine for that, but I'm not so sure on Battlefield 3

Yeah, I refuse to feed the Windows beast, and give Linux the recognition it deserves. I'm pretty happy I live in the same state as Torvalds (and 2 towns away) and might even get the change to meet him some day!

Yes, it is also wise to have both Wine and Crossover, just in case something performs better on one than the other

If you ever do get a chance to meet him tell him one thing, campaign for native linux games! Because well they're lacking...

If only linux could take centre stage...

If you read the end of the article then you'll get a glimpse of the fun of getting games to work.
