I am going to oc my xfx 7870 DD and I found an article that tells me that talks about overclocking the 7870 ( http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/radeon_hd_7870_overclock_guide,2.html ) I want to know if these setting in the article are accurate for the XFX 7870 DD. Will I need extra cooling for my gpu when OCing. Right now I have two 80mm side case fans.

Quote:
The three variables you need to coop with are GPU clock, memory clock and power control settings.

But without a voltage tweak, our card is stable up-to roughly 1100 MHz. To emulate our setting:

Set the GPU clock at 1100 MHz on the core (1000 = default)

Set 1450 MHz on the memory (1200 =default). Memory is quad data rate hence you get an effective 5800 Gbps effective.

Set the Power control slider to 20%

The lowest slider 'power control' slider is important, your 7870 is limited and tied to the cards maximum board power. The maximum board power roughly 75 Watt however the 7870 is configured at a 140W TDP. By increasing the power slider towards 20% you increase the board TDP 140(W) x 1.20(MP) towards 175 Watt, this gives you more overclocking headroom as the card may now deliver more power throughout the board.

For the default overclock we ended at 1100 MHz on the GPU core and 1450 (x4 quad data rate)=5800 MHz on the memory."

Every graphics card overclocks differently. Its the silicone lottery as such.
Your best bet is to do the overclock yourself, taking the core and memory up at small increments at a time, this will help not stress the card.
Once you've increased the core for example 50mhz you test for stability by playing games for a few hours etc.

But you will need 20% offset power slider for a good overclock.

Dont go to crazy on the increments, 50-100mhz to start with on core and memory clock, then as you reach what that article says or close to, slow the increments down. The guide is purely reference, and lucky you can use it aswell, have a search on google on other peoples overclock records.

Do I do each clock speed one by one such as start with core speed after it is stable, do the memory clock.

Another question do I need to buy a new cooler or is the cooler on the xfx good enough. I have xfx double dissipation edition

I would still recommend that you turn up those fans because when I oc, I prefer to keep the card as cool as possible. You should be fine with everything as stated above. All I know is that I max at 1278 mhz on a 7870 hawk on the core with 1.35 v

I am quite curious about how the 7870 from xfx fairs with the voltage. I know that I am somewhat safer because the hawk has the reactor, so how would the 7870 overclock without the reactor. Please post your highest overclock because I am curious

I would also like to know what people got for the max oc limit w/o touching the voltage especially for the xfx DD edition.

I did and all I find is them talking about the black edition not the regular DD edition
