Disconnect you HDD and you CD drives
If you have 2 x RAM modules take one out to

Power on
If you get in the BIOS you just have disconnected the faulty module ...
Connect them back one by one and power on after ever add ...

Thanks Nikolay...did as you suggested and the culprit was the cd/dvd drive; with the drive removed,i was able to get into bios and change the boot order to an external usb cd drive to load win xp OS which loaded fine. Does this mean the CD/dvd drive is faulty and needs replacing or should I install a new driver? thanls again!

Hi
Try to reconnect it back.
If you problem is back also REPLACE it or just disconnect it and use external.

Reconnected cdrom and wouldn't load or let me into bios - seems to be waiting for some event or instruction. Bought a 2nd hand replacement (same model) cd/dvdrw but getting the same result.....unless anyone has encountered this and knows the reason it looks like i'll have to use an external cdrom. Thanks for the advice.
