Soon it will be about time for me to be off to college (W00T compsci majors!) and I just last year got a Hp pavilion dv6 7020us laptop as a bday gift so I cant exactly go get a new high end lappy... So I figured with my first homebuilt pc newly finished (and likely staying at home) I could just upgrade it myself... I intend to do (as much as hardware allows) virtual machining and internal penetration testing (a mobile PT lab if you will), along with various other programming. so I figure an upgrade to the ram and CPU should do the trick... I believe its a socket G2

Here is a link to various specs: http://www.cnet.com/laptops/hp-pavilion-dv6-7020us/4507-3121_7-35323845.html

Any help as to components is greatly appreciated (though I would prefer to keep the cost down as low as possible)

Keep on mind that you may need to upgrade the bios if you manage to find and add new CPU in you laptop.

I figured it wouldnt be the easiest job to replace the cpu but i figured I would ask 1 if I even should and 2 (if I should) which one to get

Have a look on the Service guide i link you.
|You see that you have few type of cooling systems.
Try to see what is you`rs .
Changing CPU and keeping old cooling system may have high temp or bad cooling.

I will not advise you to upgrade any way !
I`l get what i can for the old laptop and invest it in new one - you get new specs and warranty also ...
Or just add more RAM and live it bee ....

If you haven't upgraded your memory yet, then try the following websites or do a google search using the specs you found at the other retail stores -
http://www.memorystock.com/memory/HewlettPackardPaviliondv67020us.html
http://www.kingston.com/en/memory/search?DeviceType=3&Mfr=HEW&Line=Pavilion%20Entertainment%20Notebook&Model=80821
http://www.crucial.com/upgrade/HP+-+Compaq-memory/Pavilion+DV6+Series/Pavilion+dv6-7020us-upgrades.html

Upgrading the CPU, will void the warranty I believe so let it be as it is. Maybe an SSD is better.

Good luck with the upgrade.
