45 yr. old noob here who's always loved electronics, but have a lot to learn in this arena. I have been reading sites and reviews for 10 days now, and made some of my first purchases today. Mostly going to use the PC for gaming and A/V in home. Here is what i've done so far based on my reading. Today I purchased:

Case~Factal Design Define R4 in white with the window.
MBO~Gigabyte G1 Assassin 2 (x79 / 2011)
SSD~Samsung 840 Pro Series 128GB
HDD~ST2000DM001 2TB

My dilemma is over the power supply, processor and processor cooler, and graphics card.

I will finish up tonight with the RAM and BlueRay drive. But I have much to learn about the above 4 items, and i feel i really need to make a better educated decision on them together since they all rely on each other.

My question is...does anyone have an advice based on experience on what works well with my MBO?

Thanks in advance!

~VA

I don't think you need that Gigabyte motherboard. $300+ for a motherboard is very expensive. Not only that, your CPU is affected. So now, you must select a high end i7. So go with i7-3820. Noctua NH-D14 cooler. And whichever you can afford: Radeon HD 7850 / 7870 / 7950 / 7970. Best to state your budget. My advice would be to return your motherboard.

I wanted to build a mean machine in the new x79 / 2011. Read a lot of write ups on the MOBO and liked it. It wasn't really a matter of need. lol More a want. A friend bought the Asus blah blah Deluxe, and has had a lot of problems. I'll probably be in the 2k range total. $135 for the case, $300 for the MOBO, $142 for the SSD, and $99 for the HDD thus far. I was looking at the GIGABYTE NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680...can't stomach the 690 just yet. I like your idea on the 3820. The 3930 is almost double the price and the 3960 is crazy high. But I do want it to be a bit of a bad___. ;-)

LGA2011 is a complete waste of money for gaming, but it's too late since you already bought it.

-Cheapest LGA2011 processor.
-The best air-cooler, very quiet but very big. Your case, motherboard and ram should have no problem though. Just that there'll be a big chunk of heat-sink when you look in your window. If you don't like that, grab the Corsair H100i closed-loop water cooler. It's louder than the Noctua air-cooler but it looks better.
-Cheap, low-profile ram that works.
-The 7970 beats the GTX670 and can compete with the GTX680 at a good price.
-Modular cabling psu for better cable management. 80+ GOLD to save some energy. 850w so you can run a future crossfire.
-Standard, cheap optical drive.
