Hi all,

Got an old Dell C640 laptop with windows 2000 on it and it boots with the 256mb pc2100 sodimm that it came with, and I can enter setup. It's reported that the machine could, perhaps, maybe work with 2x 1gb sodimms as the chipset supports that much, so I got 2 sodimms off ebay and I can't even get to the setup screen; the machine shuts down as if no memory's installed. I guess it can't see the memory and thinks maybe that none's installed, or the sodimms are bad or not "worthy"-hard to say since startup doesn't get far. Anyone know of way to "force" the machine into seeing the memory, or a workaround?

TIA!!

The Dell Latitude C640 series maxes out at 1GB of RAM. Also, it looks like your system runs on DDR, which is an older memory standard (DDR3 is current, and DDR4 is in the works). See here for suggested upgrades.

Thanks Donald,

Yes, that's true, the C640 use DDR1. It's been reported however that you can use 2 1gb DDR1 sodimms for a max of 2gb; the C640 was released before there were 1 gb DDR1 sodimms or they weren't commonly available.
The chipset supports the 1 gb sodimms while the official limit is 2x512 Kb sodimms for a total if 1 Gb. I was wondering also if a certain manufacturer's ram worked, while what I got off ebay doesn't
