Adding Post Count under avatar so people will know how long you ahve been around the forums and how much active you are.

A mouse hover over the avatar shows more detail but I appreciate that new posters wouldn't necessarily know that or accidentally find it.

The primary means by which a user can identify someone who has been proven as an expert with knowledge about the area they are asking questions on would be badges. Badges do show up under the user's avatar in questions that have been tagged appropriately, and this is a great way for users new to the forum to be able to tell at a glance who is recognized as having some experience on the topic.
