Ethernet network adapter not picking up the connection

hello guys my ethernet port light of my desktop isnt blinking actually the green one is good but the orange is silent means its not blinking at all is that the reason because of which my computer isnt picking up the connection though i had tried pluging d ethernet cable in my laptop and its working fine in it that means cable is good but when i plug in the cable in ethernet slot of my desktop it doesnt pickup the connection .please help with any possible solution other then buying an external PCI Network card or usb rj45 ethernet connector .
It would be a great help if u suggest me a good solution
