M580 not charging the battery

My camera is not charing my battery. What may be the possible reason?

Could be the battery will no longer hold a charge. How long have you had the battery? Does the camera power on when you plug in the power adapter? Do you leave the battery in the camera when it is not in use? I have read that if you leave the battery in the camera when not used for a long period of time it will shorten the battery life.
