A worthy upgrade?

How does this upgrade look?

Phenom II x6 1035t @ 2.6 GHZ ---> FX 6300 Vishera @ 3.5 GHz

I won't be able to overclock the 6300 right away because my PSU is limiting, but there is no chance of ever overclocking the 1035t as it's attached to a dell mobo. I have an HD 6870 and notice some bottlenecking in all relatively new MMO's and some other games like New Vegas and Spec Ops the Line notably.

If I got the 6300 it would probably be the final upgrade for a few years until I build an entirely new PC.

First, are you getting a new motherboard? Second, how many watts does your PSU output? I'm almost certain your PSU can handle a few extra watts. It would be a decent upgrade but I'd say just go straight for the 8350 or go Intel for gaming. The 4th gen Intel CPUs are coming out in June.

I need a new mobo for sure, mine is an AM3 not an AM3+, and I have a 500 watt PSU and no calculator will put my system with a 125 watt CPU above 500 watts but I'm still worried to go even close to that number.

AM3 socket motherboards support AM3+ CPUs. Though the BIOS probably won't, being a crappy OEM dell motherboard. And good luck finding a CPU support list, nevermind a BIOS update :lol:. If you're going to be getting a whole new motherboard, I'd suggest just saving up another 150$ or so and buy a Intel 4th gen i5 Haswell CPU. They're being announced/released early June.

A lot of people around here seem to think the fx 6300 is not an upgrade from the 1035t but you can't scoff at the extra 1000mhz. I might pick up an AM3+ mobo, a cooler, and a PSU to overclock this thing until Q4 when we can see what the steamroller brings us.

New plan. I'm going to go a bit bigger and get the 3570k, it's a good time for a full system upgrade anyway.

Thanks a lot for the help!
