ok so i know enough about router and how to connect them to a modem. but what about switches:

can a switch work without a router?
can i use 2 or more switches with the same modem
or can i do a connection like this:

Modem => Switch => Then wires from switch to 2 or more routers?

ok thanks and sorry if it seems nubby for me to ask questions like this :D

Yes if the modem is a dhcp server you can plug in so many switches you wish. A switch is just a connections center. If you plug in 2 switches in the modem, every Equipment Connect to the switches will talk to each other because it is the modem who gives away the ipadress.

The above post is incorrect. A modem does not give out any IP addresses. It is strictly a media converter. It converts from whatever type of wire comes into the house into ethernet. Doing any other function make it a router.

The standard answer to can you put a switch directly into a modem is no....but that assumes you have a standard home internet connection. The reason it does not work is not technical it is financial. If you agree to pay the ISP for multiple real IP addresses they in many cases can run with a switch behind the modem and multiple PC with no router.
