my wired network keeps resetting private to public on secondary pc

I set up a wired network- two nics in a Dell Precision 690, Vista ultimate x64, and a laptop , Windows 7 Ultimate, a cat. 5 cable between the two. After days, I got the laptop to connect through the internet thruogh the Dell. Yea! I worked with it for the day then shut down both PCs. When I restarted the computers again, I could not connect from the laptop to the 'net anymore. That was two weeks ago; still can't figure out what I did the first time. Any suggestions?

if you cant connect the laptop to the internet anymore after that then you may need to reset you local area connection settings (ipv4). unless you're doing something special on your laptop you can leave them on automatic.
