Hi! I'm new on the forum & not sure if I'm askin' this in the right section, but here it is: I'm a first year student in computer science and I want to start studying stuff on my own. Thing is my knowledge as a programmer/engingeer doesn't go further than basic C and some html/css/javascript. I've got no idea what would be a good home project for me, but I was thinking of something hardware related (at least a bit hardware related), like making a new menu and interface for my old Samsung mp3.

I've heard quite a few about kernel and firmware, but I'm not sure how to start writting one, or even how to crack this thing wide open. Any suggestions? Maybe it's not the right project for the moment? Help? :)

What field of CS are you more into? Web programming? Software programming? Game programming?

Find what you want to do with your career. Then find projects that steer you toward that goal.

I'm interested in web development, but I also want to learn how to control devices and make operating systems for them, that's why I chose to play with my mp3 player: it's something totally new and intriguing.
