I recently bought a HP EliteBook 8470w with an i7-3630QM cpu, and according to the HP spec PDF this model has the mobile Intel QM77 Express chipset and G2 cpu socket.

I'm upgrading the unit to 16 Gb Gskill PC3-12800 ram, a 512 Gb Samsung 840 Pro ssd and adding a Blu-ray optical drive/software.

I'm also considering upgrading the cpu, and I see the Intel i7-3840QM listed in the HP EliteBook 8470w manual as the top of the cpu upgrade path for this model. I also found a HP EliteBook 8470w listed at CDW that had an i7-3840QM.

But when I look at the Intel information for the i7-3840QM it says the compatible Intel chipsets are B75, H77, Z75 and Z77...and I don't see mentioned the QM77 Express chipset, so I'm a little uncertain that the i7-3840QM will work, and just want to be sure before I order the i7-3840QM cpu.

Will the the Intel i7-3840QM cpu work in a HP EliteBook 8470w with mobile Intel QM77 Express chipset and G2 cpu socket?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Yes, it should work just fine since your laptop model is offered with the desired CPU. For the cost and miniscule performance increase, I would suggest you not make this upgrade. It really isn't worth it. Use the money to get a larger SSD instead (just a suggestion).

Good luck!

Thanks a lot for the reply. I was able to swap out the i7-3630QM and install a i7-3840QM (I was able to buy the 3840 at a really good price sold the 3630, so my net cost for that upgrade was $150). The Elitebook 8470w runs great with the new cpu...not a huge performance boost, but I'll take it fro the net cost to get it done. I was also able to also pick up a Crucial 960gb SSD and 2 x 8gb Gskill Ripjaws 1600 RAM (CL 9, 1.35v) on a really good Black Friday sale from Newegg so was able to max out the machine's capabilities.
