I seen a bunch of discussion around the web about this, but nothing conclusive. So, my question is, can I run an mini itx system with an AMD A8-5500 on a PicoPSU-160-XT or 150-XT?

For further information, my planned build is this:

MSI FM2-A75IA-E53
A8-5500
8Gb RAM
320GB Western Digital HDD
M350 Case
PicoPSU-160-XT with 120W AC Adapter (Sold as a set)

I have a mouse, Keyboard, Monitor

Plan on getting an external DVD drive for this at some point

I plan on using this mostly for office tasks, but then when I move back to the US it will mostly likely become an HTPC... nothing crazy of super High Def, just something to play DVD's or netflix on a normal old TV (or Projector).

Any thoughts on this build would be helpful, but the main thing I'm concerned about is the PSU.

You would be pushing it with that configuration and would probably be over 160w. Swap the HD for an SSD and your consumption drops to just under 150w. Still too close to call under full load (which you may never see in the real world).

CPU - The A8-5500 is a 65w CPU which is as low as you can get. Performance wise, for a true HTPC role, the A4-5300 is enough for HD content and might save you some money.

MEM - You are pushing it already, so dropping to 1.35w modules make sense. Minimal gain, but still worth planning around.

CASE - The M350 case could work out (with the small picoPSU), but there are options for a small case that accepts a more standard PSU such as...
Rosewill RS-MI-01 Case => http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147131
...with...
SeaSonic 300w SFX => http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151089

Well, I would really like the M350 case because I will be moving from Germany to USA in a year and I have to take it back with me in my carry on...

So I'm thinking I have 2 options.

1. Use a bigger case and PSU like you said (I like the looks of the Cooler Master Elite 120), and then I would go with the A8-5600K or the A10-5800K since I could deal with the 100W TDP

or 2. I could go Intel instead. I had originally decided to go AMD because of better integrated graphics and the overall price, but the core i3-3220t has a TDP of 35W. So I could use the GA-H77N-WIFI and the core i3-3220t (Or 3225 for HD4000 graphics, but then the 55W TDP is not much better than the A8-5500) with everything else the same.

Is there a better solution that would get similar performance out of the M350 and still be in the same price range?

Hey
I just came across this thread and i am actully looking into buuilding a mini itx computer with the m350case also I want to put inside an I5 85w haswell with 8GB of Ram 1.5v Samsung 830 SSD and a Gigabyte GA-Z87N-WIFI Mini ITX LGA1150 Motherboard

i was gonna use this power supply Mini-Box picoPSU-160-XT High Power 24 Pin Mini-ITX Power Supply + 192W Adapter
what are your thoughts? you dont think i will get enough power intot the cpu to run it? also i was reading that the stock fan on the intel I5 would be to big to fit into the m350 with a 2.5inch drive, have you heard anything of the sort?

Thanks for your input.
