Will a upgrade from a 2.6 GHZ Celeron to a Intel I7 950 be a good upgrade?

I just found an intel i7 950 online at a cheap price. Considering my celeron, will this be a good upgrade for a gaming desktop? I have a Geforce 550ti. Will the i7 and the 550ti be a good gaming combination to run games at max settings?

It depends.

The i7-950 can certainly run games at max settings. Perhaps not with the 550Ti; for most games yes, but not for games like Crysis 3 or Far Cry 3.

Nonetheless, it depends on the price and motherboard. The i7 may not fit into your motherboard slot, or may not be compatible with your motherboard. Also, it may not be right for the price and you may be able to get better for your money.

if u can find any SB or IB i7 it would be much better.

I'd recommend u to wait a little until haswell come out then get it or get an IB
for a cheap price [ofc its price will drop due to new gen].

u better stick with new Generations as it will be more powerful than the older.

as for 550ti like the guys said above it will bottleneck with ur CPU
so if u can sell it for a good price and get a 660ti or something like it
and get a haswell i5 cpu, well be a lot better than i7 and maybe cheaper than it.

finally, I'm not an expert and this is my opinion.

Rob, the real bottleneck is the Celeron, and that should be upgraded instead.

You suggested the 550Ti should be upgraded instead. Am I misunderstanding something perhaps?
