Currently running an fx-6300 clocked at 4.5Ghz on a gigabyte 990fxa-ud5 board. Is it worth upgrading to a i5-3570K on a MSI Z77A-G45 Gaming board?

Is there a difference? Yes. Between the 6300 and the 3570K, the difference is really quite noticeable. Though with Haswell literally coming out in a few weeks, I insist you wait for that instead before upgrading. You'll be happy you did. Even if it's just 10% more powerful, it's a "free" 10% you couldve gotten if you just waited.

You have an incredibly sweet mobo, why spend another 140 on a mobo plus 200 on the I5. Are you unhappy with the performance of the 6300? I mean if you got the money to throw around go for it, but otherwise hang onto the 6300, or if you really wanna (and i mean just have to) upgrade (and im gonna get raged at for suggesting it) go for an 8350. SO in other words no its really not worth it right now unless your super unhappy with your 6300, your mobo rocks, keep it.

No, it is not worth the switch to intel. You won't gain much over your FX6300 at all. Especially if you're OC'ed to 4.5!

What are you unhappy with? Perhaps there is an anomaly in your system that is holding back performance? We could help you with to rectify the issue without you coming out of pocket at all.

Overall I'm happy with the performance I'm getting out of my FX-6300. It was extremely easy to overclock to 4.5Ghz especially that is paired with a Noctua U12P SE2 cooler. I was able to push it 4.7Ghz, however I couldn't get overclock stable. I was worrying that the 6300 might be holding back my Gigabyte GTX 680 SOC Edition gpu. Everything is housed inside a Antec 1100 Super Mid Tower case with 9 fans + 2 fans on the cooler, so cooling isn't an issue.

@ 4.5 my 6300 doesn't hold back 2X 6950's which are give or take 7970 performance, the 7970 is give or take 680 performance. I should think you are just fine where you are at. However if you are still uncertain do some monitoring while gaming and see whats going on. I'd hate to see you ditch such a nice board to totally re invest $300 in to a dead intel socket. Remember steamroller will be releasing in the near-ish future and that will be supported on your current board.

I was able to crank up the 680 SOC Edition a little higher. The base and boost clock was set at 1137/1202MHZ with the memory clock at 6200Mhz. Now its running at 1202/1267Mhz with the set at memory clock at 6900Mhz. I was thinking if I went to water cooling I might be able to push the FX-6300 to 4.8 to 4.9Ghz. Does anyone have any ideas for a good water cooler that will fit in a Antec Eleven Hundred case? I'm leaning towards Antec Kuhler 920 or Corsair H80i.

H80i/H100i should fit into the Antec 1100, also the Zalman 9900.

no, not worth the upgrade. The amd 6300 is a quite new cpu anyway and you will be just wasting money upgrading. If you really want to update maybe wait till the new steamrollers or the next gen of amds processors.

Tom's is about as even keeled as you can get...even so, they still lean slightly toward team blue. Though it's not nearly as bad as sites like Anandtech and xbitlabs or some of the others. Their benchmarks are well done, but when they get into "rating" things...they can wander just a little off the path of neutrality. Though I don't hold it against them, it's only human nature.

For example, the GTX 690 vs. HD 7990 review. They sided with the Nvidia, even though the HD 7990 beat that card 6 ways from Sunday...their logic was "The GTX 690 is a little quieter".

Personally, if I am gaming and worried about noise, I crank up the speakers and drown out the noise anyway...(which is why my man cave is the opposite end of the house from my bedroom, the wife doesn't like the walls vibrating when something explodes :) )

Everything I have read shows Steamroller will outperform Ivy Bridge and should compete with Haswell. With that said I agree with 8350rocks, davschall, and CMI86 that I have an awesome board and it WILL be a waste to reinvest in a dead CPU socket from Intel. What I need to do is stop trying to tweak everything to an unrealistic performance level and accept that I already have a badass machine. I'm going to install the H80i and see if I can squeak a little more performance out of the FX-6300.

Now running the FX-6300 at a stable 4.832 Ghz with the Corsair H80i. It's a lot quieter than the air setup I was running with the Noctua U12P-SE2 cooler. Ram timings set at 10-12-10-31-1T @ 1866Mhz. CPUZ actually showing 1872Mhz. Definitely no need to jump ship to team blue!

What temperatures are u getting with the H80i and the OC FX6300 at 4.8Ghz?

At idle my FX-6300 is at 14C and while playing BF3 for 3 hours temps peaked at 48C.

Oh man. I can't believe how it's performing now. It's like a completely different machine. :D
