How beneficial is a sound card?

I'm looking to purchase a reasonably priced sound card. I listen to a fair bit of music, play a fair few games and watch the occasional movie on my computer. I have both a stereo Sennheiser headset and an analog Creative 5.1 surround sound system.

So firstly, is a sound card a worthwhile investment? If so, which card is a good choice? I'd like to have my mic, 5.1 system and headphones all plugged in at once if possible (all use 3.5mm plugs).

your stock 5.1 computer sound is prob ok until u want to get more serious with music. then u may want to look at a pro-level sound card or usb/firewire audio interface. look on music equip sales sites for cards for audio interfaces. if u think u may EVER start recording instruments or vocals (not karaoke) , then invest a C note for one (new to used) and learn to use it.
