i need to connect the server to an ISP modem and a switch to link with other computers on the network,i presently connected the server to the switch and the modem also to the switch,i felt the server is meant to have 2 NICs, one for isp and the other for switch to connect clients to internet , can u advise on this, the server is meant to manage the network,allow clients to share resources on the server and transfer of files between the clients

by this you mean you want it to monitor internet traffic like a proxy server?

If you just need it to be a file server and DHCP server, get a firewall/router.

Modem -> Firewall/router -> switch -> computers and server
