Wireless-N router compatible with my older modem.

I am thinking of purchasing a linksys ea4500 router because I know that my current wireless router is outdated. My question is in regards to the compatibility of that "new" router paired with my "old" Motorola Surfboard sb5101 modem. I know that the pairing will most likely "work" but will it be optimal? Will my old modem be able to support the 450 mbs?

the modem will never see the 450Mb/s since it connects to the WAN port of your router.

also the modem has only be fast enough for the speed provided by your ISP. I think the max speed on that modem is 30Mb/s since it is a DOCSIS 2.0 modem

Thank you for your response. My follow-up question would be if you think I should buy a new modem along with the purchase of the new router (Linksys EA4500). Or, do you think the pairing of my current modem and the new router will be sufficient?

there is no need to buy a new modem if it is fast enough for the internet connection you are paying for.

a new modem will not provide faster internet access.
