I am currently runnin a Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 with a FX 4100 processor with 8 Gig ram. My video card is a GTX 280. I have around 500$ budget to upgrade my system and i am wondering where to begin. I'm a hardcore gamer and also use autocad softwares for 3d modeling. I am currently runing windows 8.

Where should I start to upgrade ?

If your a Hardcore gamer, upgrade your GPU. Then your CPU.

Does the fx4100 is still good for gaming? Should i overclock it ? If yes ,what software should I use?

It's a lowish but it'll do the job. I would OC. However, be aware that without the cooling, you damage the CPU. BIOS. Every MB has their own type of BIOS, but it is all the same way of OC. THey just might be separated differently.

Gaming comes down to your GPU then CPU then RAM.
The core of it all turning those 1's and 0's into a visual spectacle.

Upgrading incorrectly would create a bottleneck, from light to severe.
For a upgrade you will need a different CPU thus a other motherboard, this also might be the case for the GPU depending on what PCEi slot you would need, RAM depending on it's type DDR3 or DDR2 would also need to fit your motherboard.
But if you need a new mother board for you CPU and/or GPU this will accommodate the RAM as well.

Your current motherboard support PCIe 2.0 buy a GPU accordingly.

If i understand well what you are saying i should buy a video card for now and save for a better board and cpu later. cause i dont think ill find a cpu and board in my price range once i change my video card. My video card should be ok when i switch boards.

That would be a good idea in my mind. As long as you have the right PCIe port on your MB to fit your GPU then you'll be fine.

thank you guys thats exactly what i have done. i bought the 7850 and it gave an remarkable boost to my pc. now for the rest of my budget should i give a try to get a better cpu? for my board it says "AMD AM3+ FX processors and AMD AM3 Phenom™ II processors / AMD Athlon™ II processors". is there any good cpu for the price that i could get?

Well you could always upgrade your cpu. One thing is, is that new gen CPU's are coming out so its up to you if you want to wait, rather then buying a older one. I know that new Haswell (Intel Based) CPU's are coming out in June sometime. Thing is with that one, you would have to change your MB to not only Intel, but to fit the new socket.

Just a quick question Erik, how much left of your budget do you currently have? Would you OC?

Around 300 $
I could oc but got only the stock fan right now. Is there any good walkthrough for overclcking it? I dont want to waste à lot of time on crashes and buts. Lol

Well, after some minor research, how about a FX-8150? That can be OC but you would need a new CPU cooler like you said.

If you want to stay as low as possible, go with air cooling. I would either recommend a Cooler Master 212 EVO, or Noctua NH-U12P. They both can handle a OC. Personally, I would prefer the Cooler Master over Noctua only because it looks much nicer. Noctua to me just looks bad, in looks. Performance is just the same.

As i saw it would be about a 10% upgrade when we compare them stock. does the OC possibility are greater than the fx4100 ?
