Basically, you need to do a re-install, not necessary to format, that way you keep your data files.

The laptop may not support the OS that you may have installed. Is it a portable or a desktop?

Edit - it's an APPLE!

Apple Mac pc or laptops (portables) require a specific type of Apple OS version, you'd need to specifiy the model number as stated underneath.
