High ping on online games

When I boot up my computer and do a ping test it comes back at 30ms but when I open a game like WoW or a program that connects to the internet the ping goes to 180ms - 400ms and stays around that even after I close out of the program.

It depends on which servers you're connecting to.

If you're in Europe and trying to connect to a gameserver in Asia,

your ping will be higher than if it was within Europe.
