Greetings Tom's,

I'm doing this as a favor for someone, and I've never upgraded Mac software, so go easy on me
;) .

Now, the computer is an iMac early 2006 model with a Core Duo (not Core 2 Duo) 1.83 GHz processor. I maxed out the RAM already to 2 GB. It's currently running Tiger but I know it can be upped to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and it would be the last update for this model.

So, what do I need to know? How much free space do I need to up it? Also, does a new installation delete all of the files?

When will Snow Leopard be unsupported?

Since I'm not that familiar with OS X Tiger, is it unsafe running that software? Also, I don't think Time Machine is on Tiger - is there a backup utility on Tiger that anyone knows of so that I can back it up just in case?

Thanks!
VV5

For backup you could try SuperDuper! - http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescri... - a free trial version is available. Before doing an upgrade of any type you should always backup or copy important files first. SuperDuper will allow you to clone the drive to an external hard drive.
What I found is that Snow Leopard 10.6.3 is the last version available on a DVD and the minimum space requirement for it is 5GB. Once it is installed you can download the update to 10.6.8 from Apple.

10.6.3 System requirements: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
