hdd isnt recognised in my comp/ disk manager

i have a 500g wd usb hdd that was working fine the just disapered, i checked disk manager and nothing but i can find it in comp management. it says its unrecognised and when i try anything an error mesage comes up saying "the media is write protected"

sounds like the drive might be dead

can you hear it spin-up or is it making a clicking noise?
