Recently one of the RAM stick (2GB) on my PC went faulty. The RAM was installed as 2 X 2GB of which 1 stick developed fault. Now I have option to replace the RAM and I am a little confused about the size of RAM that I should install. Here is the configuration of my PC.

Manufacturer : Dell Inspiron 580 ST
Processor : Intel Core i3-550
Hard Disk : 320GB SATA 3.0 GB/s
Operating System : Windows 7 Home Premium.
RAM type supported : 1333 MHz DDR3 SDRAM

For the new RAM I have the option of installing 2 X 2GB sticks or 2 X 4GB sticks. I would ideally wan't to install 2 sticks to take advantage of dual channel. Frequently used softwares by me are listed below

Microsoft Visual Studio,
AutoCAD,
Microsoft SQL Server,
IIS (for testing purpose only).

Using the 2 X 2GB RAM previously, windows 7 OS took a considerable time to boot up (around 4-5 minutes) and this is what I am trying to improve.

In summary, will installing additional 4GB RAM speed up the windows 7 boot process or it would be just a waste of memory.

thanks
Nirvan.

I'd go with 4GB if you're using AutoCAD and all that stuff.
But basically to improve your boot time, I'd purchase an SSD (Samsung 840 120GB for $99)
I would disable all useless startup programs as well.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't plan to upgrade HDD to SSD for now. Its just that one of the RAM has developed a fault, and I can increase RAM capacity since I have to purchase it anyway. I am also of the view that 4GB should be sufficient for the softwares that I am using.

Just increasing the scope of my question a little bit. Do I need to install the 2 sticks of RAM from the same manufacturer? Only one of my RAM stick(2GB) has a fault and the other runs fine. But the manufacturer of the RAM is Nanya (never heard before). So, can I pair a RAM from Nanya with one from say Kingston, as long as they both are 2GB 1333MHz DDR3 ? Will it run as Dual Channel ?

Different brands are okay but make sure they're both at 1333MHz but if you have money to spare, I'd replace them altogether.
