tried to change file system, now hard disk is "damaged and unreadable"?

Hello everybody,

i tried to change my external hard disk's file system from fat32 to ntfs, used windows xp's cmd. through the process i got some error message - can't really remember which was it- and now when i plug the hd in the icon appears, but when i try to access it i get a "file or directory damaged and unreadable" message.
Is there a way to make it work again without formatting? The hd is full of data!

The file system got corrupted. If so run a chkdsk to repair file system error with /f/r. If the problem persists try data recovery software to recover your data.

There are tons of free software out there try them. No need to format at this time. The files/data's are there but windows can't find it or have no idea what to do with it.
