Hello!!

Im going to be building my first gaming rig :D
I've decided (but am open to suggestions) on my parts but I'm not sure what wattage PSU I need.
I don't really know what affects the minimum wattage so these are the parts I would assume might affect it the most.
Nvidia Gtx 670
Intel i5-3570K
2 sticks of 4GB DDR3 RAM

If there's a part I haven't mentioned that you need or a part you would suggest I change just tell me!!

Thanx!!

More about : psu wattage

Ok i see a gaming setup socket 1155. Motherboard? i would recommend a mobo z77 (overclocking, sli) h77 (no overclock, 1 gpu) with 4 slots of ddr3 for further upgrades. The i 5 can run higher (no overclock) withDDR3 1600 mhz RAM.
For your PSU wattage you must provide more system information (like hdd? ssd? fans? led fans? coolers? DVD Rom? usb devices?
i guess with the information u provide you must need in excess of 550W (prob. 600w and above)
i like Extreme Power supply Calculator. nice page and online calculator
a c 134 ) Power supply

For a single GTX 670, NVIDIA recommends a PSU with a minimum wattage of 500W. You need a PSU with two supplementary 6-pin PCIe power connectors and a minimum of 15 amps current rating on the +12V rail. I would recommend the XFX 550W one.

ok
thank you for such a quick reply -_-

I think the speed of this is 2400hz RAM
Not sure though :/
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

and the mobo I was going to use was this one
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

and for fans, the case I had found actually comes with some
3x 120mm
1x 200mm LED
I wasn't sure if I would need more or not

the Hard drive I had found was this one
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

I would have one basic dvd-rom drive

also one aftermarket cooler
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

I actually used that calculator and it came out with 370ish watts...
thats why I came here

I might go SLI in the future and/or OC the processer (hence the "K")
How much more wattage would I need??

750W. You can find the same XFX brand PSU in 750W.

problem
I saw a bunch of negative reviews for this PSU
About the RMA process being hard
And about it frying parts O_O

Just to be on the safe side, I'd like to look for alternatives are there any other PSU's that you would reccomend looking at?? (preferably modular btw)

I actually just found this one
It looks pretty similar but with better reviews and it's Modular ;)

Ram is 1,65 v better go for 1,5 v RAM for the motherboard.

in the extreme power calculator u should also take account of capasitors aging for every day use (at least 40%) and full load of cpu with overclocking options maxed and have a psu that supasses that number to say u can have a system fullproof for 3-5 years and overclock upgrade. put 50w on top of that to be safe and the name values of psu for watage 125% compare to real output.
Also buy XFX Seasonic Antec first
then Corsair etc

Thanks a million
I found this RAM, its DDR3 1866 1.5V
What do you think?

I used the PSU calculator and got a suggested 794 watts (I included some ideas I had for the future)
Should I just get an 800w PSU or a 850w
Also, why do you suggest those PSU companies to start??

@matex68: take customer reviews with a grain of salt. XFX's PSU are made by Seasonic and Seasonic is arguably the best PSU OEM.

Ok
Also, are there any downsides to a modular PSU vs a conventional?

i dont know if the Ram will work smothly with the i5 and the mobo (it might be perfect and then again it might not. i would suggest 1600, even the highest i7 runs RAM with 1600mhz.
SO 1600 Mhz = no overclock = stability
so if u overclock go for higher speed (1,5 volts always) maybe 2133mhz

Your system is a good gaming system i think you need stability so i recommend buy 2x4 gb kingston value ram 1600 mhz (its the most common memory so u can find 2 more identical in say 2-3 years time and upgrade) Still i think 8gb is enough and futureproof
so go for a 650-750w psu with the current system
if u want to overclock or/and sli/crossfire u will upgrade ur PSU to a 850w (maybe more depending on GPUs) at that time

If u have a small case go for modullar PSU
modular means less cables it is not a big deal in my opinion, has advantages with cable managment
but regular PSU are tested more often by users so we have a better reliability index from users feedback

Ok
Thank you
I have actually had a change of heart on the GPU front, the gtx 770 is only a little cheaper and has a bit more performance.
How much more power would I need, will the CPU make it bottleneck?

the gtx 770 draws 230W alone and nvidia recommends a minimun PSU of 600w. so to be safe 750 w is enough.

About the bottleneck, to tell u the truth i dont know,
but if u have a CPU of 200 dollars and a GPU of 400 dollars the CPU will be the first to bottleneck not the GPU (the CPU on your setup might bottleneck in 4 years with a 2017 realesed heavy game)

get a 750w PSU so u can add devices and overclock safely

About your system----
you want a good gaming system. thats what i deduct from ur choices
the gtx 770 is a great card to work with an i7 like the 3770K and above.
with the i5 it will work perfect but it is too much for the i5. i dont think the i5 will bottleneck but the gtx 770 is nearly a waste
a more balanced choice can be the i-5 3570K with the gtx 560
or the i7 3770K with the gtx770

i would get the gtx 770 with the i7 hasswell, only if i had a gaming 1ms monitor and wanted to play in the highest resolution

be more ballanced
GPU price cant be double the CPU price
The i-5 3570K with the gtx 560 is perfect and save money
with a 750w PSU to add devices and oc

ok
Not sure which way i'm gonna go
but thank you so much
you've basically given me two options for builds to go with :)
I think that's all I need
