Hello,
I want to upgrade my pc and I am between these equally priced upgrades:
I5 4670k + zalman cnps10x cooler + z87 Asus motherboard +16 GB 1600 ram
Or
I7 4770 (stock cooler) + h85 Asus motherboard + 16 gb 1600 ram

The first upgrade can be easily overclocked but the second has better cpu from the start.

I mostly care about gaming.

Get the i5-4670k if you care about gaming.

The Core i7 CPUs have Hyper Threading (HT) which is why they cost more, but games do not use HT. Therefore, it is not worth spending the same amount of money for a CPU that has a feature which you will not benefit from and does not allow you to overclock.

Yep and the K modekl is unlocked so can prob easily hit 4.4 or 4.5 (higher 4.6+ may take little effort do get it smooth and keep temps reasonable), while then plain wrapper 4770 is locked and limited to turbo-boost

Well according to passmark's cpu benchmark, The i7 4770 would have a negligeable advantage.

i7 4770: 10 009 points ( http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html )

My i5 4670k overclocked: 9 922 points ( http://www.passmark.com/baselines/V8/display.php?id=13126234780 )

So the question should be: Are you really willing to pay 100$ more, for such a low difference in benchmark points while you would never, ever see any difference in real world performances? Now that answer is up to you mate.

Btw, that zalman cooler looks quite a lot like my Thermaltake frio. I'm also on air cooling, but really, with mine at least, it gives pretty much the same results as people with entry-level water cooling system.

Have a nice day, and good luck with your build :)

Edit: I have an entry-level Asus Z87-A (150ish) which has all the features i need, and supports both CrossfireX AND SLI. Not at all a deal breaker for me, but it might be of interest for some.
