Hi all

I just upgraded my PC with i5-4677k; Gigabyte H87M-D3H (mATX-style mobo); and 2 x 4GB of DDR3.

Currently I am using GeForce 9800GT GPU which I purchased about 3 years ago. It is not a bad card at all and allows me to use Photoshop, do GoPro video edits with Sony Vegas Pro 11 and play games like Skyrim. IF I did, however, decide to upgrade my GPU, what would be the logical next step? Again, the card should be able to handle photo and video editing and be good for gaming.

I have been buying most parts from a local shop here in New Zealand, and they sell the following GPUs - http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=c&p=video_cards. For reference, 1 NZ$ = 0.80 US$. I would prefer not to spend more than about NZ$400 (US$320) - although if there is something so much more amazing which costs a bit more, please do mentions it.

Thanks in advance.

What is your PSU wattage and intended gaming resolution? Also the card could priced much higher in your country so recommending the card based on US price might not for your situation.

Hi renz

My screen resolution is 1920:1080. My PSU is Cooler Master eXtreme Power 650W.

You maybe right about the price, so maybe ignore about that part of my post - the question is simply what would be a good step up from 9800GT to be used for photo editing and gaming, without going overboard.

Maybe I should have asked first how 9800GT compares to the modern GPUs? Have the technology progressed considerably in the last 3 years?

Have a read here:

You'll find the comparison chart at the end quite helpful.
Either card listed will be a big upgrade over a 9800 but if you're not playing graphically intense games the 7850 will offer the best value...Of course the 7870 is a fair bit faster, making it a better long term prospect.

Both are good upgrades from 9800gt. 7870 is around 20% faster than 7850 so if ur budget allows 7870 will last longer

9800GT is about 6670 performance. right now that's considered as very basic card if you have gaming in mind. for 1080p current mid range cards (amd 7800 series, nvidia 660 series) are strong enough to play games on high setting with good frame rates.

Thanks everyone, now I have a better idea of what to go for.

Thanks.

Hi all

I ended up buying. 7870 gpu. I had some other problems with PC which the store have been dealing with so they also installed the card.

When I got home, I realised that my card was not using the full monitor area but was leaving about an inch on every side dark. I updated all drivers from AMD website, but it did not help. None of the windows 8 resolution options or AMI Catalyst Centre options were helping either.

I read somewhere online that my old nvidea drivers maybe interfering and should be deleted. Which I did using add/remove programs.

Now, on restart, the monitor start flickering from black to grey once it get passed the mobo options screen. I cannot see anything.

Any suggestions? I must have affected some radeon drivers when deleting nvidea drivers.is it possible to reinstall them from BIOS? Also my cpu also has internal graphics - how can I use it to get to windows 8?

Hmm.

    Try to remount the card.

Try uninstalling all drivers including the old Nvidia drivers with "Driver Sweeper" (uninstalling in add/remove programmes may not be sufficient in some cases). Do this in safe mode.

If possible, try the card in another machine to rule out a faulty card

If none of the things work RMA the card and get a new one. Do not waste too much time on trying to fix a card that's broken. You still have the old 9800 GT to wait for the new card :)

For your scaling problem on the monitor you can either try to auto detect settings in your monitor preferences or you can go into CCC an adjust the scaling in there. It may also be caused by a faulty card though.

Hi mahisse. The card is not broken - it worked well until I unistalled my old cards drivers. Only after that the problem started.

Hmm, the not being able to start problem is solved - run Win 8 through integrated graphics and re-installed the drivers. but the screen still has a 1-inch unused screen area on the edges. Any suggestions?
