If I connect my ps3 using hdmi (from the ps3) to a vga switcher (using a converter) and plugging my laptop into the other bit of the switcher will I lose quality for the ps3 and will it work just as if I had plugged the hdmi straight into my monitor?

More about : ps3 monitor vga switcher

You cannot use the monitor of a laptop as a PS3 monitor. The VGA is for sending video out, not in.
If you have a laptop that has VGA input (wich I never heard of) you won't lose quality, unless the laptop monitor is not as good as the other monitor.

I mean using both a laptop and ps3 on one monitor a benq and using the switcher to switch between the two i.e. they are both going to go into the monitor via a hdmi switcher

The VGA signal doesn't support full 1080p, its standard definition. So yes you will lose quality by converting the PS3 to VGA. The monitor should have both a HDMI and a VGA. Why not just plug the laptop into the VGA and the PS3 into the HDMI? Or just get an HDMI Switch and run them both through it, removing VGA completely?

I see your point and that's what I was actually hoping to do run them both using a switcher into one hdmi slot so I could simply press a button when someone came into my room and switch from the ps3 to laptop without anyone seeing it. I thought that this would be the quickest way however I found out today that hdmi switchers sometimes take 10 seconds. Is there are quicker way or different kind of switcher for changing between sources. I don't mind if they're plugged into separate inputs just that I can change between them very quickly at the push of a button

A dsub HD15(QXGA) will do up to 2048×1536@85Hz, my Sony FW900 CRT does up to 2,304 x 1,440.

Do these two enable fast source switching e.g. Up to 2-4 seconds between the two (laptop and ps3) because that's what I'm after mainly but I also don't want to lose quality

I have never used them for fast switching but I think 4 seconds is doable.
