So I'm thinking of getting a new laptop for gaming (MSI GE60 0NC-622UK), which runs at 1920 x 1080 and was hoping to use the monitor which I currently use for my PC which runs at 1680 x 1050.

Would I receive any problems with the display (either being blurry or stretching) if I connected the laptop to the monitor?

(Sorry if this is a stupid question, I've had my PC for ages so haven't really had to ask questions like this before).

No issues at all if you run the monitor at the native resolution. You will be able to set the laptop screen and the external monitor to different resolutions, so don't worry about this.
